What It Does

Renting compaction equipment in Utah

Compaction is the step that decides whether what you build on top holds up. Get density wrong and the settlement shows up later as cracked slab, sunken backfill, or a failed inspection. The right compactor depends on the material as much as the area — cohesive soils and granular fill behave differently under the same machine.

Choosing a size

Plate compactors
Best on granular material — sand, gravel, road base. Fast over open flat areas and the usual choice under slabs and pavers.
Rammers (jumping jacks)
Narrow footprint and high impact force, which makes them the tool for trenches and cohesive or clay soils where a plate just rides on the surface.
Rollers
Walk-behind and ride-on, smooth drum or padfoot. Built for area — road base, large pads, and asphalt work where a plate would take all week.

Common jobs

  • Trench and utility backfill in lifts
  • Base preparation under slabs, footings, and pavement
  • Asphalt patching and repair
  • Subgrade compaction ahead of concrete
  • Meeting a specified density for inspection

Questions

Compaction Equipment rental questions

Plate compactor or jumping jack?
Material and shape decide. Granular fill in an open area wants a plate. Clay or a narrow trench wants a rammer — its concentrated impact reaches depth a plate cannot.
How many passes do I need?
It depends on lift thickness, material, and moisture, and the honest answer is that a density test is what proves it. As a rule, thinner lifts and more passes beat one thick lift every time.
Do you rent asphalt rollers?
Rollers suitable for asphalt patching and repair are part of this category. Check current availability with the yard, since it varies.
